ABOUT LEA

Lea Cundy originally began painting in acrylics, but has used oils and watercolor.  “Working with clay is  what I love the most, however.     Lea’s fascination with clay began with instruction from Max Butler.

“Hand painted pottery is what I am emphasizing now in my studio.  One of my favorite projects is creating murals using multiple hand-painted tiles.  I have also been doing  dinnerware, pitchers, bowls and large platters.  I can hand form a shape or I keep a variety of shapes  in imported bisque.”

“Though I have been practicing some form or artistic endeavor most of my life, I really became serious about art as a profession  in 1992 or so, when we moved to Texas.  Being artistic runs in my family.  My grandmother was a self-taught artist and she introduced me to painting when  I was a little girl.  My daughter and son are both very creative.”

Growing up on a farm in up-state New York, Lea explains she was always around animals. “I always had at least one horse. Every year I waited for the wildflowers to bloom and I would ride up on the hill to pick them.   Today we have three dogs.  Being associated with farm life and the country has probably influenced my artistic style.  I love wildflowers, and my style lends itself to a “folk art” or  “primitive motif”.

Lea and her family live in Bastrop.  Her husband, David, is in construction.  Her adult daughter, Sarah, is also an artist.  Her son, Marcus, age  14, creates jewelry and, as Lea says, “Is another work in progress”. Lea and David are also foster parents of teen girls. "This leaves little time for pottery" she says.

Examples of Lea’s work can be found in the Bastrop Fine Arts  Guild, the Lost Pines Hyatt Regency Resort McDade Gift Shop and at the Lady Bird Johnson Wildflower center in Austin.
